Si formò a Torino e a Roma, dove si trasferì nel 1893, in un ambito culturale partecipe del socialismo umanitario e del positivismo scientifico, affrontando tematiche come il paesaggio urbano e le condizioni umane, in un linguaggio che trae elementi dal verismo, dal liberty e dal neoimpressionismo. Artista maturo e affermato, nel 1910 firmó, con i suoi allievi Boccioni e Severini, il 'Manifesto dei pittori futuristi' e il 'Manifesto tecnico della pittura futurista'. Nasce a Torino nel 1871.
